Hungary's VIKTOR ORBAN steps down from parliament after a landslide defeat, vows to rebuild

Monday, April 27, 2026- Viktor Orbán has announced he will step down from parliament following a crushing election defeat that ended his 16-year grip on power.

His nationalist Fidesz party suffered a dramatic loss in the April vote, with the opposition Péter Magyar leading a sweeping victory that secured a dominant parliamentary majority and signaled a major political reset in Hungary.

Orbán said he would not take up his parliamentary seat, declaring his focus would shift to rebuilding his political movement rather than serving in the legislature.

His party’s representation collapsed significantly, reflecting voter frustration and a decisive shift toward change after years of centralized rule and controversy over governance and corruption.

Despite the setback, Orbán made clear he is not exiting politics entirely, pledging to reorganize and strengthen the “national side” ahead of future battles.

The move marks a turning point not only for Hungary but for Europe’s broader political landscape, as one of the continent’s most influential and polarizing leaders transitions from power to opposition.
