Chancellor RACHEL REEVES says Iran war was a ‘mistake’

Thursday, April 16, 2026-Chancellor Rachel Reeves has sharply criticized the ongoing Iran conflict, describing the war as a “mistake” and questioning whether it has made the world safer.

Speaking at an event on the sidelines of IMF meetings in Washington, Reeves said she was “not convinced that this conflict has made the world a safer place,” arguing that diplomacy should have remained the preferred route.

She stressed that negotiations with Iran were still underway before the escalation and suggested that breaking off those talks in favor of military action worsened global stability and economic conditions.

Her comments come as the UK government continues to assess the economic fallout from rising energy prices and wider global disruption linked to the war. Reeves has previously warned that the conflict could fuel inflation and slow growth, increasing pressure on households and public finances.

While reaffirming that the UK is monitoring developments closely, she has consistently emphasized de-escalation and renewed diplomatic engagement as the most viable path forward.
