Indonesia reduces in-office work to cope with energy crunch due to Mideast conflict

Tuesday, March 31, 2026-Indonesia has announced a reduction in mandatory in‑office work and encouraged greater remote work to help manage an energy crunch linked to rising fuel prices and global supply disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict.

Government officials said the move is intended to reduce energy consumption across public sector offices and support broader efforts to conserve fuel amid tightening markets.

The decision affects several ministries and state‑owned enterprises, with agencies now adopting flexible work arrangements to cut electricity use and transportation demand.

Authorities noted that while domestic energy production remains stable, imported fuel and rising global prices are putting pressure on national reserves and budgets. Officials stressed that the changes are temporary but necessary to help ease strain on the economy and public services.

Business groups and workers welcomed the shift to remote work, saying it has the added benefit of reducing commute costs for employees already feeling the impact of higher fuel prices. Analysts say the policy could serve as a model for other countries facing similar energy cost pressures as the conflict continues to reverberate through global markets.
