Ukrainian naval drones strike two Russian oil tankers in Black Sea
Monday, December 1, 2025 -Ukrainian security forces say they used marine drones to strike two Russian oil tankers — Kairos and Virat — in the Black Sea off Turkey’s coast, targeting what Kyiv calls Russia’s “shadow fleet.” The two vessels, both under international sanctions for sanction-evasion, were reportedly empty and en route to the Russian port of Novorossiysk to load crude when they were hit.
After the drone strikes, the Kairos caught fire and required evacuation of its crew, while the Virat sustained serious damage; both tankers have been effectively disabled, according to Ukrainian officials.
This marks a major escalation in Kyiv’s maritime campaign — shifting from attacks on refineries and port infrastructure to striking vessels at sea. According to the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), the drones carried high-powered warheads and the damage inflicted on both tankers was critical, effectively removing them from Russia’s oil-transport network.
Ukrainian authorities estimate the targeted ships could have carried nearly US$70 million worth of oil, making the operation a potentially significant blow to Moscow’s ability to finance its war efforts through oil exports.
The swift, high-impact strike has already triggered international reactions. Turkish authorities condemned the attack, noting it occurred within Turkey’s economic zone and warning that such actions pose serious risks to navigation, safety, and regional economic stability.
Meanwhile, energy markets and global observers are watching closely — as disruption of Russia’s "shadow fleet" could ripple across global energy supply and reshape how wartime oil logistics are conducted. The incident underlines how maritime warfare and sanctions-evasion tactics are converging, and demonstrates that conflict at sea is increasingly central to the broader geopolitical struggle.
