Black Friday shooting at Westfield Valley Fair mall may have been gang-related, police say
Monday, December 1, 2025 -Shoppers at Westfield Valley Fair Mall were thrown into chaos Friday evening when gunfire erupted around 5:40 p.m., leaving three people wounded — a man, a woman, and a 16-year-old girl.
All victims were rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Witnesses described a terrifying stampede as people ducked behind clothing racks, hid in storerooms, or ran for the exits while terrified crowds swarmed toward safety.
Preliminary investigation by the San Jose Police Department suggests the shooting was sparked by an argument between the suspect and the male victim; the two women were innocent bystanders struck by stray bullets.
The suspect reportedly fled before officers arrived; no gun has yet been recovered. Authorities say the incident appears to be an isolated altercation but also note that early indications point toward a possible gang-related motive.
Though Westfield Valley Fair reopened the next day, the after-effects linger: shaken shoppers, increased police presence, and growing concern about safety in public spaces on what should be one of the busiest retail days of the year.
San Jose’s top officials have vowed swift action and public reassurance, but for now many are left grappling with the fear and uncertainty that followed what began as a routine Black Friday shopping trip.
