Friday, June 5, 2026- In a major flare-up in Middle East tensions, U.S. forces intercepted and shot down four Iranian attack drones that were launched toward the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, officials said.
According to U.S. Central Command, the drones were deemed an “immediate threat” to maritime traffic in the narrow but critical waterway through which around one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies transit.
Following the intercepts, U.S. forces struck Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites in Goruk and on Qeshm Island to blunt further threats, signaling an escalation in the fragile tensions around Gulf security.
Tehran’s launches come amid back-and-forth hostilities that have already strained a tentative ceasefire and heightened global concerns about energy supply stability and shipping safety through the Hormuz corridor.
These developments underscore a rapidly deteriorating security situation in the Gulf, where military engagements risk triggering wider conflict. The United States maintains a blockade and defensive posture to counter Iranian missile and drone threats, even as diplomatic efforts to sustain peace talks remain tenuous.
Any further escalation could disrupt global oil markets and deepen political pressure on leaders to find a lasting resolution.
