Progressive topples former New Jersey Gov. JIM MCGREEVEY in Jersey City mayoral runoff

Wednesday, December 3, 2025 -
In a decisive runoff election held December 2, 2025, James Solomon — a 41‑year‑old city councilman — handily defeated Jim McGreevey to become the next mayor of Jersey City. Solomon captured roughly 68–69% of the vote, while McGreevey secured about 32–31%, according to unofficial results.

Solomon ran as a clear progressive, emphasizing affordability, fighting the influence of developers, and pledging to prioritize residents over special interests. In contrast, McGreevey — backed by establishment figures, labor unions, and parts of the Democratic machine — struggled to overcome lingering concerns about his past and establishment‑style politics.

The victory marks a major shift in Jersey City’s political atmosphere: a rebuff of traditional political power in favor of grassroots organizing and progressive policies. As Solomon begins his term next year, expectations are high for action on housing costs, tenant protections, and broader reforms — signaling a new chapter for a city facing rapid growth and mounting affordability challenges.
