Indian politician stuns onlookers and rights groups by yanking down Muslim woman’s hijab

Wednesday, December 17, 2025 -A high‑profile Indian politician sparked nationwide outrage after he pulled down the hijab of a Muslim woman during a public event in Patna, the capital of Bihar.

The incident occurred as the woman, a newly recruited doctor, approached the stage to receive her appointment letter at a government ceremony when the state’s chief minister reached out and removed her face covering in front of attendees, leaving her visibly shocked.

The video of the act quickly went viral on social media, drawing sharp condemnation from rights groups, political opponents, and public figures.

Amnesty International India described the gesture as an assault on her dignity, autonomy, and identity, saying it sends a dangerous message that such behaviour is acceptable and violates the fundamental freedoms of religion and expression. Critics argue that no public official has the right to police a woman’s choice of clothing or religious expression.

Political backlash has intensified, with opposition leaders demanding accountability and some even calling for the chief minister’s resignation.

A formal complaint has been filed alleging the act set a dangerous precedent, and public debate continues over respect for personal dignity, religious freedom, and the responsibilities of those in power.
