FBI arrests suspect in pipe‑bomb case as Jan. 6 anniversary looms
Friday, December 5, 2025 -The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested a suspect in the high-profile case of two pipe bombs placed outside the headquarters of the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) — a dramatic breakthrough nearly five years after the devices were discovered on the eve of the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Brian Cole Jr., was taken into custody in Woodbridge, Virginia, and is now charged with transporting an explosive device via interstate commerce and attempted malicious destruction by explosive.
Investigators say the case was solved not because of fresh tips, but thanks to painstaking analysis of credit-card records, license-plate data, cellphone location pings, and purchase history for bomb components — a testament to years of tireless, methodical police work.
Though the bombs never detonated, authorities maintain the devices were viable and could have caused serious harm. The arrest injects new urgency into efforts to fully understand the events leading up to Jan. 6 — and raises crucial questions about motive and whether more persons may be involved. Prosecutors say the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be forthcoming.
