TRUMP’s ‘garbage’ rhetoric on Somalis sparks national outrage
Friday, December 5, 2025 -Donald Trump has ignited a firestorm after calling Somali immigrants “garbage” during a recent cabinet meeting — a sharp escalation in his long history of inflammatory remarks.
His comments went beyond criticism, telling Somali migrants they "contribute nothing" and urging them to “go back where they came from,” while targeting Ilhan Omar — a naturalized U.S. citizen of Somali origin — with similarly derogatory language.
The reaction from within his administration was stark. Members of his cabinet, including JD Vance, applauded, and White House spokespersons lauded the remarks as a bold stand. In contrast, most of his Republican congressional colleagues remained silent — a notable departure from past uproars over such language.
Meanwhile, civil-rights organizations, immigrant rights advocates, and many lawmakers condemned the remarks as xenophobic, racist, and dangerous — warning they risk normalizing hate speech and legitimizing discrimination.
For Somali-American communities — especially in Minnesota, where a significant Somali diaspora lives — the comments have triggered fear and outrage. Leaders warned that such dehumanizing rhetoric could fuel prejudice, harassment, or worse, and view the remarks as a political attempt to scapegoat immigrants amid larger social and economic anxieties.
As immigration enforcement intensifies, many fear the consequences may stretch well beyond political debate — threatening civil rights, community safety, and core values of inclusion and dignity.
