Ukraine’s corruption investigators bring the drama
Thursday, November 20, 2025-A massive anti‑corruption probe known as Operation Midas has sent shockwaves through Kyiv’s political and energy spheres.
Ukraine’s top watchdogs — the National Anti‑Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office — say they uncovered a sprawling $100 million kickback scheme tied to the state nuclear company Energoatom. The alleged mastermind: Timur Mindich, once a business partner close to President Zelensky.
The scandal has prompted serious fallout at the highest levels of government. Ukraine’s justice and energy ministers have resigned amid mounting pressure, and a sweeping audit of all state-owned companies has been launched.
Meanwhile, investigators have not held back — carrying out more than 70 searches, seizing millions in cash, and releasing audio recordings of coded conversations that allegedly mapped how bribes flowed through the system.
But the drama doesn’t stop there. In a separate case, anti-graft agencies exposed a multi-million‑dollar corruption ring in military procurement. High-ranking officials — including a member of parliament and National Guard personnel — are accused of inflating contracts for drones and electronic warfare systems, with kickbacks reportedly as high as 30%.
At a time when Ukraine’s very survival hinges on transparent governance, these investigations are raising tough questions — and putting the country’s anti-corruption promises to a brutal test.
