Monday, November 10, 2025 -The team’s pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz have been federally indicted for allegedly rigging specific pitches during games so that sports bettors could profit from “prop bets.”
Investigators say bettors made well over $400,000, and the two men are charged with wire fraud conspiracy, bribery, sports contest corruption, and money laundering.
The alleged scheme reportedly began in May 2023 with Clase and became coordinated with Ortiz in June 2025. One cited instance: Ortiz reportedly agreed to throw a ball on a particular pitch for a $5,000 bribe on June 15, and a subsequent game on June 27 reportedly involved both players accepting $7,000 each to manipulate the outcome of a first pitch.
Both players have been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave by Major League Baseball and face the possibility of being permanently banned from the sport if convicted. The case sends a clear message that sports-betting integrity is under intense scrutiny across professional athletics.
