ByHeart baby formula recalled following multistate infant botulism outbreak

Monday, November 10, 2025 -A serious health alert has been issued following a multistate outbreak of infant botulism linked to ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula.

Thirteen infants across 10 U.S. states—Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington—have been hospitalized after consuming formula from two specific lots (206VABP/251261P2 and 206VABP/251131P2, use‑by December 1, 2026).

Preliminary tests in California found the type of bacteria that can produce botulinum toxin in a sample of the formula, prompting the company and health officials to issue a voluntary recall.

Health authorities including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are actively investigating to determine the source of contamination and any wider risk to other products.

Although the formula involved accounts for less than 1% of the U.S. infant‑formula market, the urgency is high given how rare and serious infant botulism is.

Parents and caregivers are being urged to check their formula cans immediately, stop using the identified lots, and dispose of or return the product. They should also thoroughly clean any bottles, utensils, or surfaces that may have come into contact with the formula using hot, soapy water or a dishwasher.

If your infant consumes the formula and shows symptoms such as poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing, weak muscle tone, or changes in cry, seek medical attention without delay—these symptoms can emerge weeks after consumption.
