Tuesday, November 11, 2025 -A powerful winter storm blanketed Chicago early Monday, prompting a Winter Storm Warning and forcing several Chicago Public Schools to close due to hazardous driving conditions.
The National Weather Service reported more than six inches of snow in some areas by dawn, with gusty winds reducing visibility and creating near whiteout conditions on major highways. City officials urged residents to avoid non-essential travel, warning that plummeting temperatures could turn slush-covered streets into sheets of ice by evening.
The Department of Streets and Sanitation deployed more than 300 snowplows across the city overnight, focusing on clearing main routes and intersections near hospitals and emergency facilities.
Despite the efforts, morning commutes were severely impacted, with widespread flight delays at O’Hare and Midway airports and numerous minor traffic accidents reported. Officials said public transportation remained operational but advised commuters to expect delays and dress for subzero wind chills.
Chicago Public Schools announced selective closures and remote learning for affected districts, citing safety concerns for students and staff. “Our top priority is keeping everyone safe,” a CPS spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, meteorologists warned that lake-effect snow could continue into Tuesday morning, bringing additional accumulation to the city’s northern suburbs. As residents dig out, emergency crews remain on high alert — prepared for another long night battling a storm that shows little sign of easing.
