Arctic blast sweeps across U.S., bringing snow and record cold to the south

Tuesday, November 11, 2025 -A surge of Arctic air has plunged much of the United States into a deep freeze this week, delivering snow to parts of the Midwest and Northeast while sending unusually cold temperatures as far south as Florida.

Meteorologists say the mass of frigid air, driven by a sharp dip in the jet stream, is expected to linger through midweek, pushing wind chills well below zero in several states. The National Weather Service warned that millions are under freeze alerts, with overnight temperatures in some southern regions expected to drop 20 to 30 degrees below seasonal averages.

In the Southeast, residents unaccustomed to such cold scrambled to protect crops, pets, and plumbing. Northern Florida saw temperatures fall into the 30s — with reports of frost in Jacksonville and light snow flurries near the Panhandle.

Power companies from Georgia to Texas have activated emergency protocols to handle increased energy demand, while shelters in major cities expanded capacity to accommodate those seeking warmth. Transportation officials also warned of icy roads and urged drivers to use caution, especially in areas unprepared for winter conditions.

The cold snap arrives on the heels of a powerful winter storm that dumped heavy snow across the Great Lakes and the upper Midwest, snarling travel and delaying flights nationwide.

While forecasters expect temperatures to gradually moderate by the weekend, another surge of Arctic air could follow close behind. For now, much of the country is bracing for a long, bitter week — a stark reminder that winter’s grip has arrived early and shows no sign of letting go.
