Wednesday, September 3, 2025 -The United States has conducted what President Donald Trump described as a “kinetic strike” on a suspected drug-trafficking vessel originating from Venezuela, leaving 11 people dead.
The operation, announced late Monday, targeted a fast-moving boat believed to be transporting narcotics through Caribbean waters. Officials said the strike was part of broader efforts to dismantle smuggling networks linked to organized crime and hostile state actors.
The news sparked immediate backlash in Caracas, where Venezuelan officials accused Washington of escalating tensions and violating international law. Supporters of the Venezuelan government warned that such actions could be seen as acts of aggression, fueling President Nicolás Maduro’s claims that the U.S. is seeking military confrontation in the region.
Human rights groups also expressed concern about the lack of transparency regarding rules of engagement and whether due process was considered before lethal force was used.
In Washington, the administration defended the strike as a necessary show of strength, arguing that drug cartels have increasingly relied on maritime routes to traffic narcotics into the U.S.
While the Pentagon declined to provide detailed intelligence behind the strike, Trump framed the operation as a warning to both traffickers and foreign governments accused of enabling them. The move raises questions about how far U.S. military actions might extend in the Caribbean and whether tensions with Venezuela will spiral into broader conflict.
