UN Security Council to meet on Russian jet incursions

Tuesday, September 23, 2025 -The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting after Estonia accused Russia of violating its airspace.

Tallinn reported that three Russian MiG-31 jets entered Estonian territory over the Gulf of Finland on September 19 without flight plans or communication, prompting a NATO interception by Italian F-35s.

Estonia’s foreign minister condemned the incident as part of a wider pattern of Russian provocations and a breach of international law. The government urged the UN to address what it called a violation of sovereignty and security.

Moscow has denied the allegations, dismissing them as baseless and accusing Estonia of escalating tensions. The meeting marks the first time Estonia has brought such an issue to the UN Security Council since joining the body 34 years ago.
