Sunday, September 21, 2025 -Estonia has accused Russia of violating its airspace after three fighter jets entered over Vaindloo Island in the Gulf of Finland. Officials said the aircraft flew without flight plans, had transponders switched off, and ignored air traffic control.
NATO scrambled Italian F-35 jets under its Baltic Air Policing mission to intercept the planes. Estonia’s government called the intrusion “unprecedentedly brazen” and has summoned Russian diplomats while requesting NATO consultations under Article 4.
European leaders condemned the violation as a dangerous provocation, warning it underscored broader regional risks. The incident marks the fourth reported breach of Estonian airspace by Russian aircraft this year.
