Tuesday, September 23, 2025 -Israel’s leadership has denounced recent moves by countries such as the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal to recognize a Palestinian state.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the decisions “hollow” and argued they reward terrorism, citing the October 7 Hamas attack as proof of the security risks posed by unilateral recognition.
The recognitions are viewed internationally as symbolic steps meant to bolster the two-state solution, but Israeli leaders across the spectrum insist that statehood must come only through direct negotiations. Far-right ministers have urged annexation of West Bank areas in response, deepening political divisions at home.
Critics of Israel’s stance say recognition carries moral and political weight even if symbolic, while Israeli officials warn it undermines peace prospects. The dispute underscores the widening gap between Israel’s position and growing international pressure for Palestinian statehood.
