Sunday, September 21, 2025 -An immigration appeals court has ordered the deportation of Mario Guevara, a Spanish-language journalist from Atlanta who was detained by federal agents earlier this year.
Guevara, originally from El Salvador, was arrested in June while covering a protest in DeKalb County, despite wearing a vest labeled “PRESS.” All criminal charges against him were later dropped.
The deportation order stems from a 2012 immigration case that had previously been closed, allowing Guevara to live and work legally in the U.S. His attorneys say the government’s decision to reopen the case is retaliatory and violates his press freedoms. Guevara also has a pending green card application through his U.S. citizen son.
Supporters, including civil liberties groups, are calling for his immediate release from ICE custody and have filed emergency motions to block deportation. They argue that sending him back to El Salvador would place him at risk and undermine protections for journalists.
