Congressional candidate thrown to ground during ICE protest in Illinois

Saturday, September 20, 2025 -A demonstration outside an ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois, turned violent when federal agents used force against protesters, including Kat Abughazaleh, a 26-year-old Democratic congressional candidate. Abughazaleh was thrown to the ground as officers attempted to clear demonstrators blocking vehicles from entering or leaving the facility.

The protest was organized in response to the Trump administration’s Operation Midway Blitz, which has expanded immigration raids in the Chicago area. Agents deployed tear gas and pepper balls during the confrontation, leaving several protesters injured. Abughazaleh reported bruises and condemned the response as a violation of her First Amendment rights.

Federal officials defended the actions, saying demonstrators were trespassing and obstructing operations. Illinois leaders, however, criticized the tactics as excessive and politically charged. The incident has intensified debate over immigration enforcement and civil liberties.
