College of Charleston instructor among victims killed in Lisbon funicular crash



Sunday, September 7, 2025 -A tragic funicular crash in Lisbon, Portugal, claimed the lives of 16 people, including Dr. Heather Hall, a faculty member at the College of Charleston. The accident occurred when the historic Elevador da Glória derailed and struck a building, injuring several others.

Dr. Hall, known for her dedication to literacy and special education, had traveled to Lisbon to speak at a conference. Colleagues and students remember her as energetic, kind, and deeply committed to her students’ success.

Portuguese authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the derailment, with early reports pointing to possible mechanical failure. 

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of Lisbon’s historic funiculars, and inspections are underway. The College of Charleston is offering counseling and support to those affected by this loss.
