Sunday, September 21, 2025 -Former NFL quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick is receiving widespread praise after stepping in to assist the family of De’Martravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old student found dead on the campus of Delta State University in Mississippi.
Authorities initially ruled the death a suicide, but Reed’s family raised concerns about conflicting details and requested further review.
Through his Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative, Kaepernick has pledged to fund an independent autopsy to provide the family with greater clarity. Local officials said there were no signs of foul play, though toxicology results are still pending. Students and community members have since held a vigil in Reed’s honor.
The move has been met with appreciation from Reed’s loved ones and supporters, who say Kaepernick’s actions highlight the importance of transparency and accountability in cases where unanswered questions remain.
