Thursday, November 5, 2026 - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed fresh hope that the Democrats' victory in the November 2026 US midterm elections will unlock stronger American support for Ukraine as the war with Russia continues.
Speaking in an interview with German broadcaster ZDF, Zelenskyy said the election outcome could create new opportunities for increased military assistance and financial backing. Democrats are set to take control of both chambers of Congress in January, potentially reshaping discussions around Washington's continued involvement in supporting Kyiv.
Zelenskyy welcomed the Democrats' clear commitment to supporting Ukraine while also acknowledging the importance of bipartisan cooperation with Republicans. He emphasized that stronger relations between the United States and Europe would be essential in confronting Russian aggression.
The Ukrainian president believes additional American weapons and financial assistance could increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and encourage Moscow to reconsider continuing the war. European leaders have also called for closer US-European cooperation and stronger measures to support Ukraine.
Attention is now turning to January, when the new Democratic congressional majority is expected to take control of the legislative agenda. However, increased assistance is not guaranteed, as President Donald Trump remains in office and retains significant influence over American foreign policy.
Meanwhile, US-led peace discussions involving Ukraine and Russia are expected to resume in Abu Dhabi on November 10–11, focusing on ending the conflict and establishing security arrangements. For Kyiv, the coming weeks could prove critical in determining whether renewed political support translates into concrete military assistance, stronger diplomatic pressure and meaningful progress towards peace.
