Thursday, November 5, 2026 - A devastating wildlife attack in western Canada has claimed the lives of a mother and her 20-year-old daughter, prompting an urgent safety response from local authorities.
The victims, identified as Jenny Balcarras and Selah Reed, were found dead near the Snooka West Trail in Bella Coola, British Columbia, following a suspected fatal grizzly bear attack.
Their family reported them missing on Sunday, November 1, before search teams discovered the mother's remains on Monday and her daughter's body on Tuesday. The tragedy has shocked the small community and renewed concerns about encounters between humans and dangerous wildlife.
British Columbia's Conservation Officer Service has launched an investigation to establish exactly what happened and determine whether one or multiple bears were involved. Inspector Jeff Tyre confirmed that officers are searching for the animals potentially responsible and warned residents to stay away from the affected trail area.
Authorities have also imposed a community curfew as a precaution. Any bear confirmed to have been involved in the fatal attack will be killed in accordance with public safety guidelines. Officials have not yet established the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The deaths have raised fresh alarm because Bella Coola experienced another serious grizzly bear attack in November 2025, when 11 people, including schoolchildren and teachers, were injured.
The animal involved in that incident was never captured. Wildlife experts have also raised concerns about habitat loss and food shortages contributing to increased human-bear encounters in some parts of British Columbia.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution, avoid restricted trails and follow official wildlife safety warnings.
