Child actor from Elf's very different career away from acting after quitting Hollywood

Friday, November 6, 2026 - Fans of the Christmas comedy Elf may remember Daniel Tay as Michael Hobbs, Buddy's younger half-brother, but the former child star has taken a completely different path since leaving Hollywood.

Tay was just 11 when he appeared alongside Will Ferrell in the 2003 festive hit, winning attention for his portrayal of the young boy who initially struggles to understand Buddy's unusual personality.

More than two decades later, however, Tay has left the entertainment industry behind and built an impressive academic career far removed from the movie sets that introduced him to audiences.

After his appearance in Elf, Tay continued acting in a handful of projects, including Brooklyn Rules, and also worked in voice acting for films and video games.

His final major acting credits came around 2009, when he decided to concentrate on education instead of pursuing further Hollywood opportunities. He subsequently attended Yale University, graduating with a degree in economics.

He also worked as a teaching assistant and peer tutor before becoming an SAT instructor at Veritas Prep. His academic journey later took him into medical research at Columbia University, followed by medical studies at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Tay's transformation from a recognisable child actor into a medical student has attracted renewed attention, particularly as Elf continues to enjoy popularity with new generations of Christmas movie fans.

His story offers a different perspective on life after childhood fame, showing that success does not always mean remaining in the spotlight. While Will Ferrell continued building his Hollywood career, Tay chose education, research and medicine.

Although he has stepped away from acting, his memorable role as Michael Hobbs remains part of one of the most recognisable Christmas films of the modern era.
