Saudi military helicopter crashes in Najran, killing two crew members

Monday, October 19, 2026 - A Saudi military helicopter has crashed in the Najran region of southwestern Saudi Arabia, killing both crew members in a deadly incident near the border with Yemen.

The Saudi-led coalition confirmed on October 18, 2026, that the aircraft was an AH-6i reconnaissance helicopter operated by the Saudi National Guard. The deaths come as security concerns rise across the kingdom amid renewed attacks involving Yemen’s Houthi movement.

Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Maliki attributed the crash to a technical malfunction but did not disclose the identities of the two officers or provide further details about the flight. However, Yemen’s Houthi movement separately claimed to have shot down a Saudi helicopter near Najran.

The group’s initial statement referred to an Apache helicopter, while subsequent footage was presented as showing an AH-6i. The competing accounts have not been independently reconciled, and the Houthi claim remains unverified.

The fatal crash adds to growing security concerns along the Saudi-Yemeni border as regional hostilities intensify. Najran remains a strategically sensitive area because of its proximity to Yemen, where Houthi forces have repeatedly launched missiles and drones toward Saudi territory.

Authorities now face the task of establishing the circumstances surrounding the helicopter’s loss while maintaining security against further threats. As investigations continue, attention will remain focused on the official findings, the safety of military operations, and the potential consequences of further escalation in the region.
