Wednesday, October 14, 2026 -British comedian and actor Russell Brand is facing a major legal battle as his rape and sexual assault trial opens at Southwark Crown Court in London. Prosecutors allege that Brand told one woman “don't be a spoilsport” when she asked him to stop during an alleged sexual assault in 2004.
The 51-year-old denies all the charges against him, which include three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault involving six women. The alleged offences date from 1999 to 2009.
Opening the prosecution's case on October 14, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones told jurors that Brand used his charm, humour and public profile while allegedly pursuing women for sexual contact. The court heard allegations involving different locations, including a hotel room, workplaces and a bar in London.
One complainant alleges that Brand raped her in a hotel following a Labour Party conference in 1999, while another alleges that he sexually assaulted her in a bar toilet in 2004. These remain allegations that the prosecution must prove in court, and Brand has pleaded not guilty to every charge.
The trial has attracted widespread attention because of Brand's former status as a major television and film personality and the seriousness of the accusations. The proceedings are expected to examine evidence relating to the six complainants, with the jury tasked with assessing the facts before reaching a verdict.
Brand told reporters as he arrived at court that he felt concerned but hopeful that the process would lead to a fair outcome. As the case continues, the focus remains on the evidence presented, the legal process and the rights of everyone involved.
