Wednesday, October 14, 2026 -A 44-year-old woman from El Salvador has been rescued after spending approximately 20 hours in the Ionian Sea following an incident aboard Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas.
The dramatic rescue took place near the Greek island of Zakynthos after the woman reportedly went overboard early on Friday, October 9, 2026. Greek coastguard officials said she was found conscious inside a lifebuoy by the cargo ship MSC Rossella III in the early hours of Saturday.
The rescue has drawn international attention because surviving so long in open water is exceptionally dangerous, particularly when exposure, exhaustion and changing sea conditions threaten a person’s life.
The rescue followed a coordinated search involving the Greek coastguard, military aircraft and nearby vessels after authorities received an alert about the missing passenger.
The cargo ship spotted a flashing light attached to the lifebuoy and alerted rescuers, allowing a coastguard patrol boat to reach the woman and bring her aboard. She received first aid before being transported to the port of Katakolo and taken to hospital for medical examinations.
According to a coastguard spokesperson cited by AFP, the woman reportedly told rescuers that she had jumped because she wanted to disembark. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, while Royal Caribbean confirmed that it launched a search operation and is assisting the woman’s family.
The incident has renewed attention on passenger safety, emergency response procedures and the challenges of locating someone who falls or jumps from a moving cruise ship. Survival in open water depends on several factors, including access to flotation equipment, sea conditions, water temperature and how quickly search teams respond. In this case, the lifebuoy and the cargo ship’s timely discovery proved crucial in bringing the woman to safety.
Investigators are now examining the circumstances of the incident, while the passenger’s medical condition and recovery remain important concerns. The successful rescue offers a remarkable outcome to an extremely dangerous situation and highlights the importance of coordinated maritime search-and-rescue operations.
