Tuesday, October 13, 2026 -At least five people have been killed and around 30 injured after the Rehman Baba Express, travelling from Karachi to Peshawar, derailed in Pakistan’s Punjab province early Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
The accident occurred at approximately 5:15 a.m. near Sher Shah Bridge in Multan district, with all 14 coaches reportedly leaving the tracks. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, while injured passengers were transported to Nishtar Hospital in Multan for emergency treatment.
Emergency workers continued rescue operations as authorities worked to evacuate passengers and assess the full extent of the disaster. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the loss of life and directed officials to accelerate rescue efforts and ensure the injured received appropriate medical care.
Railway officials also initiated an investigation to establish what caused the derailment. A passenger reportedly claimed that repairs had been carried out on one coach before the accident, but the allegation has not been independently verified and has not been established as a contributing factor.
The tragedy has renewed urgent questions about railway safety, infrastructure maintenance and passenger protection in Pakistan. Repeated derailments have placed the country’s railway network under scrutiny, increasing pressure on authorities to identify risks and strengthen safety inspections.
For passengers and their families, the immediate priority remains medical assistance, accurate information and support for those affected. As investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, the findings will be critical in determining responsibility and identifying measures to help prevent similar accidents.
