India's 'cockroach' movement leaders detained in jail for five days, party and police say

Wednesday, October 14, 2026 -Two leaders of India’s youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, have been ordered to spend five days in judicial custody following a protest at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar site.

The detention, announced on October 14, 2026, followed an incident in which the activists allegedly climbed over barricades to enter the protest area and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Delhi Police said the leaders had violated previous legal undertakings and cited concerns that they could repeat the alleged offences if released. The decision comes as demonstrations over India’s voter registration process continue to draw national attention.

The protests centre on revisions to India’s electoral rolls that have removed more than 130 million names, according to reported figures. Election authorities say the changes include deceased people, individuals who have relocated and voters who could not be traced, while maintaining that eligible voters can re-register.

However, opposition parties and activists allege that the process risks excluding legitimate voters, particularly members of marginalized communities, and have called for greater transparency. The Election Commission and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party deny allegations of political bias. Meanwhile, CJP supporters say the detention of their leaders will not end their campaign for electoral accountability.

The five-day detention could intensify tensions between authorities and a youth-led movement that has expanded its protests beyond electoral issues to include unemployment and public education. The group has vowed to continue its campaign, while police maintain that action was necessary because of alleged repeated violations and concerns about public order.

The coming days will be crucial in determining whether demonstrations grow or authorities impose further restrictions around protest sites. As the dispute continues, attention is focused on the right to peaceful protest, the transparency of voter registration and the need to ensure that eligible citizens can exercise their democratic rights.
