Huge flames and smoke rise over St Petersburg after drone strikes

Monday, October 19, 2026 - Massive fires and thick black smoke engulfed parts of St Petersburg, Russia, following a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on October 18, 2026. Dramatic footage showed flames rising from industrial and logistics facilities as emergency crews rushed to contain the damage.

Russian officials confirmed that air-defence systems had been activated during the overnight assault, which targeted key infrastructure across the city and the surrounding Leningrad region. At least one person was killed, while several others were injured.

Among the affected sites were the St Petersburg Oil Terminal, the Ruchyi oil depot, and a major warehouse operated by online retailer Ozon. A data centre linked to Russian technology company VK was also reportedly targeted.

The attacks forced authorities to temporarily restrict operations at Pulkovo Airport as safety concerns mounted. Russian officials said air-defence units intercepted large numbers of incoming drones, although fires and infrastructure damage were reported across several locations.

The strikes highlight the growing intensity of Ukraine’s campaign against Russian energy and logistics infrastructure as the war continues to threaten critical services and regional stability.

Oil facilities are particularly significant because they support Russia’s fuel exports and energy revenues, while disruptions to transport and digital infrastructure could create wider economic consequences. With emergency operations underway and the full extent of the damage still being assessed, international attention is focused on Moscow’s potential response and the risk of further escalation.
