Monday, October 26, 2026 - At least 10 people have been killed after armed gunmen attacked Binnari village in Taraba State, north-east Nigeria, raising fresh concerns over civilian safety.
The attack occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, shortly after Muslim prayers, as the assailants opened fire, looted shops and set homes ablaze. Police initially confirmed 10 deaths, but reports indicate the toll has since risen significantly.
The violence left residents fleeing for safety as the attackers reportedly arrived on motorcycles and terrorised the community for hours. According to reports published on October 26, police said the death toll had risen to at least 48, while Amnesty International reported that as many as 52 people had been killed.
Authorities are facing growing pressure to strengthen security, protect vulnerable communities and establish accountability for the deadly assault.
The immediate priority is to prevent further attacks, support affected families and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Security agencies must intensify patrols, improve early-warning systems and respond swiftly to threats against rural communities.
As investigations continue, residents need reliable information and visible protection, while humanitarian assistance remains essential for survivors who have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods. The tragedy in Binnari is another urgent reminder that protecting civilian lives must remain a top priority.
