Austria expels four Russian diplomats on security grounds

Monday, October 26, 2026 - Austria has ordered four Russian diplomats to leave the country following security concerns over activities deemed incompatible with their diplomatic status.

The decision, announced on October 23, 2026, affects three diplomats at Russia’s embassy in Vienna and one official serving at Russia’s delegation to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The move comes as European governments remain increasingly alert to suspected intelligence operations targeting national security and sensitive institutions.

Austria’s Foreign Ministry said the expulsions were based on findings by its security authorities but did not publicly disclose detailed evidence against the individuals. The action brings the number of Russian diplomats expelled by Austria from 2020 to 18.

Moscow has criticised the decision and warned that a response will follow, raising concerns about further diplomatic tensions between the two countries. Vienna’s role as a major international diplomatic centre makes the security implications particularly significant.

The immediate focus is now on how both governments will respond and whether the dispute will trigger additional diplomatic measures. Austria faces the challenge of protecting national security while maintaining its diplomatic commitments and its role in international organisations.

For businesses, policymakers and international institutions operating in Vienna, the development reinforces the need to take cybersecurity, information protection and intelligence risks seriously. As tensions continue, the next steps from Moscow and Vienna will be closely watched across Europe.
