Wednesday, September 23, 2026 - At least 11 people have been killed and three others injured after three gunmen opened fire at a house party in KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, on Tuesday night.
Police said 13 men and one woman were inside the house when the attackers entered and began shooting. Ten victims, including a woman believed to be pregnant, died at the scene, while an 11th victim later died in hospital.
South African police have launched a manhunt for the attackers, with investigators still working to establish the motive.
Police said some of the victims were known to Crime Intelligence in connection with suspected illegal activities, but officials have not released further details because the investigations are ongoing. Authorities have said a possible feud between rival groups cannot yet be ruled out.
The shooting has renewed immediate concern over violent crime and illegal firearms in KwaZulu-Natal.
The latest attack adds to a series of mass shootings reported in South Africa this year, while police continue gathering evidence at the KwaMakhutha scene and searching for those responsible. The condition of the three injured survivors had not been publicly detailed as of September 23.
