Wednesday, September 16, 2026 - Sir Elton John is among the stars paying tribute to legendary Hollywood costume and fashion designer Bob Mackie, who has died aged 87.
Mackie, known for creating dazzling and theatrical looks for some of the world's biggest performers, was remembered by John as an extraordinary artist whose costumes were works of art. The designer died in Palm Springs, California, from pneumonia, according to his publicist.
Elton John was one of the many major stars who worked closely with Mackie, who also created unforgettable looks for Cher, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, Madonna, Barbra Streisand and Carol Burnett.
John praised Mackie's talent, humility and sense of humour, while Cher described her longtime collaborator as a dear friend. Other stars, including Sabrina Carpenter, Miley Cyrus, Bette Midler and Liza Minnelli, have also shared tributes following his death.
Mackie's influence stretched across television, music, film and fashion, earning him nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award and three Oscar nominations.
His bold use of sequins, feathers, beads and dramatic silhouettes helped create some of entertainment's most recognisable looks, while his work continued to inspire a younger generation of performers.
As Hollywood mourns his death, tributes from the stars he dressed are highlighting the lasting impact of a designer whose creativity became part of popular culture.
