Monday, September 28, 2026 - The husband of British mother-of-four Eman el-Shazly is urgently appealing to the UK government to intervene after she was detained in Egypt for more than six weeks.
El-Shazly, 45, travelled to Cairo to visit her mother but was taken by Egyptian security forces on 17 August, according to her family. Since then, her relatives say they have had no direct contact with her and remain deeply concerned about her welfare.
Her husband, Zesharn Moustapha, has now appealed directly to Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, saying he fears his wife could become seriously ill while in detention.
The family says the case may be connected to social-media criticism of the Egyptian government by Eman's sister, Mona. Egyptian authorities accuse Eman of joining and financing a terrorist organisation, spreading false news and encouraging demonstrations, allegations she denies. Her lawyer says no supporting evidence has been provided to the family.
The case is drawing renewed attention as Eman's four children face the continuing uncertainty of being separated from their mother. The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has confirmed that it is supporting the family and is in contact with Egyptian authorities.
A UK government country report updated in August 2026 also says Egyptian authorities continue to monitor, arrest and detain political opponents, activists and social-media users. With Eman's family pressing for urgent action, attention is now focused on whether British officials can secure meaningful access to her and clarify the circumstances of her detention.
