Saturday, September 12, 2026 - Sacha Baron Cohen is reportedly set to take the lead in Quentin Tarantino’s first stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier, giving the actor a major new challenge and bringing together two of Hollywood’s most unpredictable creative talents.
Cohen is expected to play the title character in the swashbuckling comedy, which is set in 1830s Europe and is being developed as Tarantino’s first professional theatre production. The show is currently planned for a spring 2027 opening.
The project could become one of the West End’s biggest entertainment talking points as Tarantino moves from filmmaking to live theatre. The Popinjay Cavalier is described as a comedy built around deception, disguise and theatrical spectacle, offering a very different setting from the filmmaker’s best-known movies.
For Cohen, the production would also mark a significant career move, putting his distinctive comic performance style directly in front of a live theatre audience rather than relying on film and television.
The timing makes the announcement even more valuable for fans, with Cohen also preparing to return as Ali G in Ali G: Who Iz I?, scheduled for release in October.
