Protesters form human chain around Kennedy center to protest DONALD TRUMP

Sunday, September 20, 2026 - Thousands of protesters gathered outside the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., forming a human chain around the arts venue in opposition to President Donald Trump’s leadership of the institution and proposed changes to its future.

The “Hands Around the Kennedy Center” demonstration brought together demonstrators carrying signs and chanting as the cultural landmark remained closed for renovations.

The protest comes amid continuing controversy over changes at the Kennedy Center since Trump took control of the institution. The center’s board, now dominated by Trump appointees, approved a major closure for renovations, while a federal judge has blocked an effort to restore Trump’s name to the building without congressional approval.

The administration has defended the changes and said substantial repairs are needed, while opponents have raised concerns about the center’s independence, programming and direction.

Artists, supporters and local residents joined the demonstration, with organizers describing the human chain as a public show of opposition to the changes. Performers also took part outside the building, keeping attention focused on the future of the institution.

With legal disputes and disagreements over the Kennedy Center continuing, the protest has added fresh public pressure to an increasingly contentious debate over the direction of the national arts venue.
