Tuesday, September 8, 2026 - Iranian authorities have arrested two people after clashes involving protesters and Iraqi students at Semnan University, following an attack on accommodation housing the students.
Videos circulating online showed a large crowd gathering outside the dormitory, with some people entering the residence, attacking students and damaging or taking their belongings. Iranian officials have launched an investigation as tensions surrounding the incident continue to draw attention.
The reason for the confrontation remains disputed. Reports circulating online included unconfirmed allegations involving Iraqi students and an Iranian woman, while Iraqi officials have described the episode as a misunderstanding and verbal altercation that escalated into violence.
There have also been claims that some Iraqi students were linked to Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces, but there is no confirmed evidence that the students involved in the Semnan incident had such affiliations.
Semnan's provincial chief justice Mohammad Sadegh Akbari said two people involved in the confrontation had been identified and summoned by police, while authorities continue working to identify others.
Iraq has also formed a committee to follow developments, with its ambassador in Tehran calling for protection of Iraqi students while urging them to respect Iranian social norms. The incident has heightened concern over tensions between local protesters and foreign students as authorities work to prevent further violence.
