Saturday, September 25, 2026 - A powerful explosion tore through a two-storey building in Athens’ popular Plaka district on Friday, killing one woman and leaving five people missing as rescue teams continued searching the rubble on Saturday.
The blast struck near major tourist landmarks including the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus, damaging nearby homes, shops and vehicles.
Emergency crews, supported by rescue dogs and specialized equipment, have been working through the wreckage in an urgent search for survivors.
The missing include an elderly couple who lived in the building and four tourists who had been staying in a short-term rental. Two women were rescued from an adjacent building, while another person was injured by debris.
Authorities are investigating the cause, with a suspected gas leak among the main possibilities. Athens officials have warned that nearby structures also need inspection following the blast, which sent debris across the surrounding streets.
The rescue operation remains active as crews work to determine whether anyone else could still be trapped beneath the collapsed building.
