Saturday, September 19, 2026 - Duncan Sheik, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and Tony Award-winning composer, has died at the age of 56. Sheik died on September 17 in New York, with his mother, Suzanne Sheik, confirming that he died from cardiac arrest.
His family had announced just days earlier that he was receiving medical care and was in critical but stable condition.
Sheik rose to international prominence with his 1996 debut album and the hit single “Barely Breathing,” which reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him a Grammy nomination.
He later established a major career in musical theatre, composing the music for Spring Awakening with lyricist Steven Sater. The Broadway production won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, while Sheik received Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations.
Sheik continued working across music and theatre until his death. His latest musical, Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, was due to begin Off-Broadway performances later in September, while a new production of Spring Awakening was also scheduled for New York this fall.
He is survived by his partner, Nora Ariffin, and their daughter, Ines. His family described him as a father, husband, son, brother and friend whose work left a lasting mark on music and theatre.
