Monday, September 28, 2026 - Amanda Barrie has opened up about ageing and the painful reality of losing friends as she celebrates her 91st birthday. The former Coronation Street star said she has lost so many friends over the years that she still keeps the phone numbers of those who have died.
Despite the sadness, Barrie says she considers herself fortunate to still be here and continues to approach life with curiosity and a determination to keep going.
The actress, best known to millions for playing Alma Baldwin, says staying active and maintaining social connections remain important to her. Barrie, who is married to crime writer Hilary Bonner, said she and her wife still spend time with friends and enjoy their individual interests.
She also acknowledged that ageing brings challenges, recently revealing that she has suffered an Achilles tendon injury that has made walking difficult, while longstanding eyesight problems have also affected her mobility.
Despite those challenges, Barrie has no plans to simply step away from life. She is continuing to work, including appearances connected to her memoir, I'm Still Here: My 90 Years, and recently took part in a new advertising campaign.
Reflecting on her long life, she described herself as lucky and stressed the importance of seeing people, talking and remaining engaged with the world. For the beloved actress, turning 91 has brought a sharper awareness of life's fragility—but also a renewed determination to make the most of every day.
