Wednesday, September 2, 2026 - Andrew Garfield is once again challenging Hollywood to imagine a different kind of Spider-Man. In a new interview, the actor reaffirmed his support for portraying Peter Parker as gay, revisiting comments he first made in 2013.
Garfield said he still believes “anyone can be in that suit,” arguing that Spider-Man’s appeal comes from allowing people of different identities to see themselves behind the mask.
The comments arrive as the Spider-Man franchise continues expanding its multiverse and introducing new versions of the character. Marvel has already brought a gay Spider-Man, Web-Weaver, into the comics, although the character is not Peter Parker.
On the big screen, however, Peter has continued to be portrayed in heterosexual relationships, leaving Garfield’s proposed direction largely unexplored in live action.
Garfield’s renewed comments are likely to reignite debate among fans over who should wear the mask next. With the future of the live-action franchise still offering opportunities for new interpretations, his message is straightforward: Spider-Man does not have to be limited to one identity.
Whether Marvel eventually takes that step remains uncertain, but the conversation is clearly back at the center of the superhero spotlight.
