Sunday, August 9, 2026 - Sudanese army forces and allied fighters have repelled a major attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the strategically important Bir Sleiba area of West Darfur, Darfur Governor Minni Minnawi said Saturday.
The assault came only weeks after army-aligned forces retook the area following fierce fighting, making the latest confrontation a significant test of their ability to hold the position.
According to Minnawi, the RSF attacked with two mobile units in an effort to surprise government-aligned forces or break their resolve. He said the assault was defeated, but provided no figures for casualties or equipment losses.
Bir Sleiba, located north of West Darfur's capital, Al Junaynah, is strategically important because of its position along routes leading toward the city and has become a recurring flashpoint in the conflict.
The latest fighting highlights the continuing struggle for control of West Darfur as both sides seek strategic positions and supply routes. The renewed RSF assault also signals that recent battlefield gains by army-aligned forces remain vulnerable to counterattacks.
With clashes continuing and civilian communities caught between rival forces, the situation in Darfur remains highly volatile and could deteriorate quickly if fighting spreads along key routes toward Al Junaynah.
