Friday, August 14, 2026 -Six people have been killed after Houthi forces attacked the Egyptian-owned cargo ship Tihamah in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, according to Yemen’s internationally recognised government.
Three missiles struck the vessel as it approached port, killing four crew members and two Yemeni rescuers and injuring at least nine others. The attack marks the first confirmed fatal Houthi strike on commercial shipping in the strait this year.
The attack has sharply raised concerns over the safety of one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints.
Survivors described fires, panic and chaotic rescue efforts after the vessel was hit, while authorities said 11 Pakistani and Indonesian sailors were rescued. The Houthis have claimed the ship was carrying Saudi military equipment, although that claim has not been independently verified.
The latest bloodshed threatens to deepen pressure on commercial shipping already facing major security risks in the Red Sea. Saudi-linked vessels have increasingly avoided the Bab al-Mandeb amid Houthi threats, while shipping companies face higher insurance costs and longer alternative routes.
With six people now dead in the latest attack, fears are growing that renewed maritime violence could further disrupt regional trade and energy supplies.
