Saturday, August 29, 2026 - Nashville International Airport could soon carry the name of country music icon Dolly Parton after Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and airport officials announced plans to pursue the change.
The proposal comes days after Parton died at age 80 and follows a surge of public support, with an online petition attracting more than 150,000 signatures. Officials say naming the gateway to Music City after Parton would create a lasting tribute to her cultural influence, generosity and connection to Tennessee.
The proposal still faces an approval process. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority is scheduled to consider the issue at its September 17 meeting, and existing rules generally require a person to have been deceased for at least two years before an airport property can be named in their honour.
Parton’s representatives have said they are touched by the proposal and open to continuing discussions, while airport leadership has expressed support for the idea.
If approved, the change would give Nashville one of the most recognisable airport names in the United States and make Parton the first woman to have her name attached to one of the country’s 50 busiest airports, according to the Associated Press.
Beyond symbolism, the proposal reflects the scale of Parton’s influence: her music helped define Nashville’s global identity, while her philanthropy has reached millions of children through initiatives such as the Imagination Library. The decision now rests with airport authorities, making September 17 a key date for the proposed tribute.
