Sunday, August 9, 2026 - A 47-year-old Washington man has been arrested after allegedly setting fire to a stranger’s garage while riding a golf cart with his dog beside him.
Surveillance footage from August 4 shows the suspect arriving at a home in unincorporated Port Orchard, approaching the garage with a torch and flammable liquid, and starting a fire while the homeowner was inside.
The flames quickly spread, causing an estimated $150,000 to $175,000 in damage and destroying a car worth about $25,000.
The suspect then fled in the golf cart but was confronted by a neighbor who witnessed the incident. Investigators say he claimed he was with the fire department before allegedly waving the torch at the neighbor and attempting to run him over with the golf cart.
Washington State troopers later located and arrested him, and he was booked into the Kitsap County Jail on suspicion of first-degree arson and second-degree assault.
The homeowner was not injured, but the bizarre attack has left investigators trying to determine why the property was targeted. Authorities say the homeowner did not know the suspect and had no apparent explanation for the attack.
With surveillance footage capturing the incident from start to finish, the case is now moving toward prosecution as investigators assess the full extent of the damage and the circumstances surrounding the alleged arson.
