Monday, August 10, 2026 - Indonesia has closed Mount Bromo National Park in East Java to tourists as a wildfire swept through the popular volcanic destination, forcing authorities to restrict access indefinitely.
The blaze burned hundreds of hectares of protected land, damaging grasslands and vegetation around the volcano and creating a serious threat to the park’s environment and visitor safety.
Firefighters, police, soldiers, park rangers and volunteers have been mobilised alongside helicopters and drones to battle the flames in difficult volcanic terrain.
Strong winds, dry vegetation and an unusually intense dry season have made containment more difficult, while Indonesia’s weather authorities have warned that El Niño conditions are increasing wildfire risks across the country.
Although authorities say the main Mount Bromo fire has since been extinguished after burning about 550 hectares, new hotspots near the caldera show that the danger has not completely disappeared.
The closure remains a major blow to tourism in one of Indonesia’s best-known destinations, while officials continue monitoring the area and working to prevent renewed fires from spreading.
