Monday, August 31, 2026 - The death toll from a Russian strike on a warehouse west of Kyiv, the war's deadliest attack this year, rose to 38 with four people still missing, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday.
The Friday night strike on the warehouse, which Ukrainian officials said was storing ammunition, sparked massive explosions and fires that swept through dozens of nearby homes and buildings in the village of Myla. At least 52 people were injured.
Emergency workers continued to extinguish fires and identify and neutralize explosives at the site. The attack came as Russia has sharply intensified its air campaign, with air raid sirens wailing repeatedly and explosions and the rumble of air defenses resounding across Kyiv.
The strike also raised serious questions over why ammunition was stored so close to residential areas, with Zelenskyy describing the situation as official negligence and ordering investigations into those responsible.
The latest attack comes as Ukraine faces growing pressure from Russia's intensified aerial campaign. Russia's Defense Ministry has also announced plans for what it called “massive strikes” against Ukraine's energy infrastructure, raising fresh concerns ahead of winter.
With the death toll continuing to rise and the threat of further attacks increasing, authorities and residents are bracing for another difficult period as the war's human and infrastructure costs continue to mount.
